The Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) left for Auckland last night. He will attend the dedication of Achilles Point today, which is the first anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate, in which H.M.S. Achilles and two other light cruisers defeated the German pocket-battleship Graf Spec. The Minister will return to Wellington tomorrow. The Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) left for Auckland yesterday. Mr. H. M. Christie has been appointed a member of the Local Government Loans Board for the period ending March 31, 1941. Mr. E. W. Hargreaves has been appointed manager of the Wellington crew in the Cornwell Cup contests at Wanganui next month. The Rev. Father W. E. Ryan, of Hamilton, has been appointed to take charge of the Catholic Institute at the Papakura military camp. The Rev. D. M. Hercus, 8.A., has been appointed Chaplain to, and a member of the staff of, Scots College! Wellington. He is a son of the Rev. E. J. D. Hercus, M.A., M.Sc, of the Christchurch Boys' High School. He was ordained in 1931 and his first church was Brooklyn. He is at present in charge of a parish in Marlborough, is a member of the Board of Governors of Marlborough College, and Moderator of the Presbytery of Nelson-Marlborough.
