STORMY WEATHER
SLOWLY IMPROVING
Special forecast for Wellington:— Southerly gale, decreasing gradually tomorrow. Winds will probably be in the north again late in the weekend. Cold and showery weather, but slowly, improving and becoming fair to fine by Sunday. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole is for winds from a southerly quarter becoming general during the next 24 hours. Winds will be moderate to fresh in force in Westland and south of Banks Peninsula, but elsewhere they will be strong, with gales in many places. They will begin to decrease in the south, however, tomorrow morning. In the North Island the weather will be stormy, with heavy passing showers in western and northern districts and with intermittent heavy rain and probably flooding elsewhere. Heavy showers are likely in Marlborough and North Canterbury also, but conditions elsewhere in the South Island will be fair to fine. A gradual improvement,, however, is likely tomorrow. Temperatures will be cold, with further snow on the high country and with hard frosts tonight in sheltered places in j the South Island.
A deep cyclone developed yesterday to the west of Taranaki, and last night it crossed the centre of the North Island. To the north of it northerly to westerly winds prevailed, but otherwise southerly directions have predominated. In the south winds have been moderate to fresh, but elsewhere gale force has been frequent. In Canterbury and Otago the weather has been fair to fine, although showers had developed this morning along the east coast. Elsewhere it has continued dull and unsettled, with intermittent rain and with some heavy falls.in central provinces. Cape Campbell has had 235 points, Featherston . 181, and Cape Egmont 169. There have been thunderstorms in many places, with scattered hail showers, and further snow has fallen on the ranges.
Moderate to strong northerly winds prevailed, at first yesterday in all four main centres, but there was a change in the afternoon or evening to westerlies or southerlies, Wellington having a southerly gale last night. In Dunedin yesterday's weather was fine, but dull and unsettled conditions developed in the other centres and intermittent rain fell. Wellington had 39 points, with temperatures ranging between 56.5 and 42.1 degrees.
