GIFT EVENING

SOLDIERS OF NORTHLAND

Soldiers of the Northland district were entertained by the Northland Khaki Club in St. Anne's Hall last evening. There was a large and enthusiastic gathering of parents and friends. The Rev. J. S. Murray was the speaker and among those on the platform was Mrs. Peter Fraser, who was presented with a posy by Margaret Taylor. Mrs. Fraser, who apologised for the absence of the Prime Minister, spoke words of encouragement to the men in uniform and urged people to do everything in their power to assist the various committees to raise funds to provide comforts for the troops. On behalf of the club, which represents all sections of the community, she presented a gift to each man, who each received also a.box of cigarettes presented by Mrs. Lowe.

The men were Lieutenant A. E. Tilley, Driver A. D. Levy, Sapper E. A. Higginbottom, Gunner E. H. Guise, and Privates F. W. Higginbottom, E. J. Johnson, and G. H. Grant. Lieutenant Tilley returned thanks on their behalf.

. The supper arrangements were in the hands of Mrs. T. Wilkinson, and much credit is due to Mrs. M. Rose and Mrs. Poynton for completing the arrangements for the function at short notice. Dances were interspersed with items by Miss K. Fuller (song), Miss I. Slater (fancy dance), Mrs. Poynton (recitation), and Mr. C. Day (saxophone solo). •
