Their Excellencies Entertained,

The Christchurch branches of four Empire organisations, the Royal Empire Society, the Overseas League, the Victoria League, and the Navy League, entertained their Excellencies the Gov-ernor-General, Viscount Galway, and Viscountess Galway on Wednesday at a garden party held at "Elmwood," many attending to honour the viceregal guests on their- last official visit to Christchurch, states the "Press." Her Excellency wore a gown of floral crepe de. chine, finely patterned on a navy ground. Her long coat was of navy, and her small brimless navy hat was massed with tiny lilac and mauve flowers. A white fox fur was a relieving note. In the evening Lady Galway visited the Canterbury Women's Club where she was complimented on the improvements made- to Government House grounds in Wellington.

"Gardening is one of my greatest joys," said her Excellency, in her response to the welcome. "I have always considered Christchurch exceedingly fortunate in its Botanic Garden, one of the loveliest I have ever seen."

Bridge Circle's Last Party.

Under the capable management of Mrs. Wyn Levick, the convener, assisted by Mesdames C. McGuone and M. E. Webb and Mr. R. A. Evansen, members and friends of the Royal Society of St. George assembled in force on Wednesday to participate in the final bridge circle evening for 1940. The circle has proved most popular and has been the means whereby many have formed new friendships. At the close of the party presentations were made to Mrs. Levick and to Miss Moya Browne.

Victoria League Musicale,

Members and friends of the Victoria League who attend the musicale held in the league room on Wednesday evening were entertained to a varied programme. Items. were given by Misses Janet Stirling, Alison Connell, and Ida Lockwood, accompanied by Misses Nora Gray and Esna Connell. Pianoforte solos were given by Mrs. G. A. Spink. Mrs. J. A. Doctor, the president, was present, and welcomed the guests.

Wadestown Garden Society.

Mr. T. E. Y. Seddon presided at the last meeting of the Wadestown Cottage Garden and Beautifying Society, when members and friends were shown pictures taken by Mr. Geo. Cooper (the society's patron) on his recent tour. Sir James Grose thanked Mr. and Mrs. Cooper on behalf of those present for their kindness in making this enjoyable evening possible. Mr. Seddoii reminded members of the talk to be given by Mrs. A. J. Dv Pont in November.

Brisk Business,at Jumble Sale,

Despite the showery, cold day, business was brisk at the jumble sale held by the Waterloo Women's Auxiliary of the Hutt Valley V.M.C.A. in the Birch Street V.M.C.A. Hall. The stalls were all well stocked and were under the direction of Mesdames J. W. Andrews, Porter, Potts, Mitchell, Grant, Seddon, Hills, Staples, Robinson, and Perigo, who, with the help of the various committee members, . were able to cope with the customers.

Patriotic Work at Seatoun,

A display of children's garments made by the Catholic ladies of Seatoun for the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild was held recently in St. Anthony's tennis pavilion, and all present expressed their intention of furthering their efforts' in the cause of charity. Afternoon tea was served.

Hard of Hearing Bridge Party.

Sir Charles Norwood, president of the Free Ambulance Board, yesterday presented the prizes won by members of the ambulance ladies' auxiliary's bridge groups which have met regularly during the year. Fifteen bridge parties were held and these were convened by Mesdames T. F. Walshe and A. Meyer, assisted by auxiliary members. Sir Charles made presentations to the conveners and to Mesdames W. H. Gledhill, F. Roffe, and Miss Bull, in appreciation of their outstanding work. Floral gifts were also presented to the conveners by the members. Yesterday was the final party for the year. Before play began Lady Norwood, president of the auxiliary, was welcomed back from her recent stay in Australia, and before tea was served all those who had donated prizes and made gifts of flowers or of money were thanked.

Amon — Fullerton-Smith Wedding.

The wedding was solemnised at St. Stephen's Church, Marton, on October 26, of Betty, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. K. T. Fullerton-Smith, of Taumarunui, and Ngaio, only son of Mr. and Mrs. A."W. Amon, Bulls, states "The Post's" Wahganui representative.l The bride wore a trained gown of ivory brocaded satin, with bustle effect, and her veil was of red French lace. Misses J. and Judith FullertonSrriith, and K. Amon were bridesmaids, wearing gold coloured ninon frocks and carrying yellow, tulips and blue iris. The bride's flowers were lily of the valley and St. Joseph lilies. Flying Officer L. Ransom and Messrs. S. and A. D. Fullerton-Smith attended the bridegroom. The reception was held at the old family home in Marton, where the beautiful grounds made a= charming setting. The decorations of church and house were gold azalea and roses. ■

The English-speaking Union rooms were well filled on Wednesday night on the occasion of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing (Wellington branch) bridge party. Mrs. J. F. Nicholson (hon. secretary) received the guests. Members and friends interested in the league's work arranged tables of bridge and "500." Among those who made up tables were Mesdames M. H. Watt, T. F. Walshe, A. Purve's, Pyne, A. Fownes, M. Hands. Warcup, Scott, Johnson, H. R. Robinson; Misses R. Isaacs, K. Kitchr ing, E. Atack, H. Eggleton, Grant; and Messrs. Malton Murray, J. Lairig, and J. Hutchison. Donations were also received from a number of well-wishers. The serving of a home-made supper concluded the party.

Camp Entertainers at Trentham. v

The executive committee of the Official Camp Entertainers was responsible for another excellent entertainment at Trentham, and the V.M.C.A. Theatre was packed with soldiers. Miss Esme Crow arranged the programme and all the performers had to respond to encores. It was the first appearance at the camp of Mrs. Tur-ner-Cottier and her talented band of instrumentalists. Members of. the party were Misses England (2), Douglas, Smith, Wyatt, Crow, Hussey, Morris, Paynter, Livermore, Turner-Cot-tier, and Messrs, Turner-Cottier, Clark, Douglas, Burridge, Stott, and Weekley. Captain Hopkirk, on behalf of the Camp Commandant, thanked Miss Crow and her band. The guests were entertained to supper by Major Mitchell and officers of No. 1 Training Unit. The executive wishes to thank the Automobile Asosciation and Mrs. Toop, Miss Peggy Bunny, and Messrs. Bacon, Bradshaw, . Balk, and Delley for providing cars for transport.
