DAY IN PARLIAMENT

END OF THIRD STAGE

After sitting for two weeks the House of Representatives adjourned last evening until Tuesday, November 26, at 2.30 p.m. This marked the completion of the third stage of the present session. The adjournment was taken until the date mentioned on the understanding that Parliament should reassemble if circumstances should arise making it advisable to call members together again before that time.

. A smart pace was set by the House during the forenoon, two Bills, the Insurance Companies Bill and the Finance Bill No. 3, being put through all stages with considerable expedition. The pace slackened, however, when the House turned its attention to the Small Farms Amendment Bill. Members of the Opposition expressed the opinion that the subject matter covered by the Bill was of such importance that there should be no suggestion of rushing, the measure through. The House sat beyond the normal adjournment time of 5.30 p.m. but subsequently the Prime Minister announced that after consultation with the Minister of Lands (the Hon. F. Langstone), who was in charge of the Bill, he had decided to give members on both sides of the House further opportunity of discussing the Bill on the second reading. The 3U.1 would be the first item on-the Order Paper when the House resumed. Mr. Fraser also explained that the only reason for the anxiety of the Government to get the measure on the Statute Book was to enable plans to be put in train immediately for the rehabilitation of soldiers. The House accordingly adjourned until November.
