TRAFFIC CONTROL LIGHTS

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Every time I sit in my car waiting patiently for the green lights to turn on I wonder how much benzine is wasted each day by the motorists in Wellington. In many instances and especially at night there is an unwarranted wastage, but no doubt the City Council has a good reason for continuing the control of traffic until 11 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays when there are so few cars on the road. But to the average motorist and those who use vehicles for commercial purposes the lights are responsible for the loss of hundreds of gallons of benzine each week. The upsetting of the Courtenay Place system has shown how traffic can adjust itself without control and I think that those who are responsible for the continuance of all other lights should give the subject some thought not only on behalf of motorists but as a contribution towards the Government's efforts to conserve benzine supplies.— 11 am, etc., ECONOMICAL.
