LATE MR. HAMMOND

NATIONAL PARTY'S TRIBUTE

Great tribute to the work done for the National Party by Mr. E. E. Hammond, whose death occurred recently, was paid at the meeting of the Dominion Council of the party held in Wellington yesterday.

The following resolution was passed:--''On the occasion of the death of Mr. E. E. Hammond, the Dominion Council of the National Party desires to place on record its sincere regret at his passing and its appreciation of a life of useful service to the Dominion. For many years Mr. Hammond has shown a keen interest in political affairs. His experience and advice were of the greatest value in the original formation of the party, where his courage and wisdom were always a valuable aid to the work of the Dominion Council."

In moving the resolution the president, Mr. A. Gordon, of Hamilton, said that Mr. Hammond was one of the foundation members and was associated with Mr. C. H. Weston, K.C., throughout the early stages. He was largely responsible for the framing of the constitution and the rules) and he gave a tremendous amount of time to the building of the organisation throughout New Zealand. It was typical of his breadth of vision that right up to the time of his death he was not so much concerned with the political past as with looking ahead to the future. His ideas had an inspirational effect on all with whom he was associated.
