REAR LIGHTS FOR CYCLES
The suggestion that bicycles should be equipped with a rear light was made by Councillor W. T. J. Morrison at a meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council this week. Councillor Morrison quoted statistics which showed that last year in New Zealand 42 people were killed and 889 injured as the result of accidents in.,which, bicycles were involved. In Lowes Hutt alone one was killed and 22 in.*" jured.
Councillor Morrison said that white mudguards and rear reflectors wera useless. The only remedy was a rear. light, which was of more value, than a front light, and personally he would not care if the front lights were abol-t ished. Front lights were necessary when roads were bad and when thar bicycle was the fastest-moving vehicle on the road. ; = ■
Other councillors did not agree that front lights were not necessary, but on the motion of Councillor Morrison they unanimously agreed to ask f off an amendment of the law making 4 rear light compulsory. •'
