TRAFFIC CONTROL COSTS
RATEPAYERS ASK QUESTIONS
Correspondence which had appeared in the Press criticising the system of traffic control adopted in Wellington was discussed at a meeting of the Wellington Ratepayers' Association last night. The chairman pointed out that the association had consistently opposed the system as being uneconomic and -troublesome when compared- with police control. The association has written to the Town Clerk asking1 for the following information: —The number of inspectors employed by the City Council for service in the traffic department; the aggregate salary paid to inspectors, and the. aggregate salary paid in the administrative section of the department; what number of inspectors employed during the period of the Centennial Exhibition are still retained as permanent inspectors or general employees of the department, and what number if any are still emplayed in a temporary capacity; in view of the greatly decreased motor traffic, due to petrol restrictions, what reduction, if any, has been made in the staff of the traffic department."
