FINE OF £60
BOOKMAKER IN HOTEL
A fine of £60 was imposed by Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Petone Court today on Rupert Joseph McKee, aged 44, who pleaded guilty to carrying on the business of a bookmaker on July 6. He was given two months in which to pay.
Detective-Sergeant F. N. Robinson said that at noon last Saturday he found the defendant in the Empire Hotel, Petone, taking bets on a scribbling pad. He had taken five bets of from 5s to £2 10s each, the1 total amount being £5 ss. There were races that day at Oamaru and Hastings. •
The defendant, who had £15 on him, said that business was not so -good, as many had left town to join the Army. He made about £5 per week from bookm^king, and about eighteen months ago had purchased a motor-car for £150, of which he still owed £60. The car had been purchased with money left to his wife by her father. Detective-Sergeant Robinson said that the defendant had not worked since July, 1938. .During 1936 to 1938 he had received sustenance of from 32s 6d to 43s weekly.
Mr. D. M. Dickson appeared for the defendant.
