V.M.C.A. FACILITIES FOR SOLDIERS

The provision made by the V.M.C.A. for members of the fighting services in Wellington was referred to yesterday by the president of the Wellington V.M.C.A. (Mr. R. H. Nimmo). He said that in addition to the facilities to be provided at the Exhibition and Winter Show buildings which had now become training centres, members of all branches of the services were invited to make use of the main V.M.C.A. building in Willis Street. Every man in uniform, whether Army, Navy, or Air Force, was regarded as a member of the association with full advantages. The special dormitory accommodation was being increased and would provide 100 comfortable beds for men on weekend leave. This was by far the largest single provision for sleeping facilities for soldiers in the city. The charge was purely nominal. Every man had access to hot showers, large lounge, and reading-room, writ-ing-room, cloakroom, and all facilities of an up-to-date club. These facilities were available 24 hours every day, not only at the weekend. Three-course meals were provided at cost price. The popular free Sunday tea for soldiers, which was pioneered in Wellington by the V.M.C.A. Ladies' Auxiliary, registered record attendances during June. .
