"READING NOW"

"Quivis" writes: I have received from a correspondent signing himself "Interested and Entertained" a gener r ously complimentary letter on last week's article "Reading Now," asking for "other authors and titles," beyond the few mentioned, for reading in these days. This raises a larger question which cannot be tackled lightly offhand. I may, however, be able to do something in that direction later. • In the meantime my correspondent—and others like him—might look over lists in "Everyman's Library" and others or browse round a good second-hand .book shop. There are plenty of treasures ,to be picked up on a judicious selection. It is not easy to prescribe a literary, diet that -will suit all readers any more than it is to say what things people should eat. I have also received from "N.J,R." a neat essay, on the general subject of reading arid its pleasures, for 'publication, but regret that under current restrictions no space can be found for it. Many thanks to the writer.
