DAY IN PARLIAMENT
FINANCIAL DEBATE OPENED
After some delay the formal debate on the Budget was launched in the House of Representatives last night by the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton). Though his attack lacked some of its usual fire, Mr. Hamilton did not hesitate to criticise the weaknesses he found in it. They were many, and he summed up his view of the document as one that was in many respects confused and confusing. One of the points he emphasised with some vigour was the need for some lead by the Government in practising economies. He was followed by the Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser), who in a general defence of the Government's proposals, answered specific points raised by Mr. Hamilton, particularly in regard to the Pnblic Works policy.
The third speaker was Mr. J. A. Lee (Democratic Labour, Grey Lynn), who campaigned vigorously against the orthodoxy of the Budget and moved an amendment designed to align opinion in the House on the issue. He was still speaking when the House adjourned at 10.30 p.m-
