SALE OF FISH

OYSTERS AND WHITEBAIT

Amended licensing notices have been issued under the Industrial Efficiency Act, 1936, relating to the sale of whitebait and dredge oysters. The two licensed industries affected are fish wholesalers and fish retailers and in both cases the definition of "fish" for the purpose of the notices has been amended so as to include Foveaux Strait or dredge oysters within the licensed industries and to exclude whitebait.

The Hon. D. Wilson stated that as the result of the amending notices persons would not now require to be licensed to sell whitebait, whether wholesale or retail, and in the case of dredge oysters no person could sell them wholesale without the authority of the Bureau of Industry. Existing fish wholesalers' licences did not extend to the sale wholesale of dredge oysters. Present holders of fish retailers' licences, however, might sell oysters subject to the existing conditions of their licences without further reference to the bureau. Auckland rock oysters, which are under the control ol! the Marine Department, are not involved in the amending notices. Mr. Wilson said it was realised that many administrative difficulties were likely to arise in connection with licensing the wholesale and retail distribution of whitebait and result in a great deal of work which might be looked upon as other than essential during the relatively short period of the whitebait season. In regard to the wholesaling of oysters, some dissatisfaction had been expressed at the change-over in the methods of distribution adopted in February. All concerned would now have an opportunity of submitting applications to the Bureau of Industry for licences to sell oysters wholesale. On the retail side there were several oyster saloons which dealt in oysters, only and these would require to make application to the bureau forthwith.
