A FAMOUS ENGAGEMENT
Memory of one of the most romantic figures in the Maori Wars, Major yon Tempsky, and of an engagement in 1868, at Te Ngutu-o-te-Manu, in South Taranaki. is revived by the death of Mr* C. H, Geary, son: of a soldier who j fought in that disastrous battle. Interest to Wellington residents is added by the fact that the officer commanding the forces was Colonel McDonell, who later lived in Brougham Street, while Private Geary was a member of the Wellington' Rifles, a pioneer volunteer corps, attached to the forces then stationed at Waihi Redoubt, near Normanby. The force was a composite one, and left Waihi to storm the rebel Hauhau Pa in the morning of the engagement, and in a desperate rearguard action fought its way out of the forest, with heavy losses. There is now a monument raised in memory of the fallen soldiers, in a park formed as i recreation ground for the district.
