STATE HOUSING

NO SLACKENING

Although the amount of £4,000,000 provided for housing in the Estimates was lower than last year, stated the Minister oi Housing (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) last night, this did not mean that- fewer State houses would be built. The position was that the 'Housing Department had bought land well ahead of requirements, and there would not be the same calls under this heading this year. "So far as the building of houses is concerned, there will be no slapken- • ing," said the Minister. "Because of the reduction on the Estii ates, some persons have interpreted the Government's intentions to be a reduction of building. The financial provision means that more will be spent on houses because it will not be necessary to spend so much on land."

All the houses for which labour and material could be obtained would be built, the Minister declared. Answering criticism of the expenditure on State housing while the Dominion was involved in a war. Mr. Armstrong said that if dwelling-houses were a luxury in wartime, .'"ye shortage of houses after the last war was a tragedy.
