SOME LAXITY AT DUNEDIN

DUNEDIN, June 10. The necessity for more .careful observance of the . licensing laws by licensees of some of the hotels in the city licensing area •was emphasised today by the chairman, Mr. J. «• Bartholomew, S.M., at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Licensing Compolice report, Mr. Bartholomew said, disclosed that the conduct of a certain section of hotels m the city district was unsatisfactory. There were 43 hotels in the district, and during the period there had been 17 cases of trading after hours, involving 13 hotels. In the case, of one hotel the former licensee had been convicted twice and the present one once, making three convictions in all. Three other hotels had had two convictions 4 each, and in the case of two of these, both convictions had been within six -months. There was reason to believe, however, that there was now an improvement in the conduct qi these hotels, but it might be well if the licensees were warned that two convictions within six months rendered them liable to forfeiture of their "The report," Mr. Bartholomew continued, "has given the committee considerable concern, and the necessity for more strict observance of the licensing laws must again be stressed. The committee will support and endorse the police in any action they may care to take, and it is hoped that the position will be improved during .the coming year."
