CHIEF CLERK RETIRES

The staff of the Social Security Department met recently to farewell their Chief Clerk, Mr. L. Crow, who has retired, after forty years' service. The chairman of the Social Security Commission, Mr. J. H. Boyes, referred to his long association with Mr. Crow. A presentation of a well-filled wallet was made, and Mrs. Crow was the recipient of a handbag from friends on the staff of the Department. Since 1906 Mr. Crow has been associated with the Pensions Department, which was the forerunner of the new and larger Department. His first Government appointment was during the Boer War, when he was requested to arrange for the supply of equipment to the soldiers proceeding overseas. When the then growing Old Age Pensions Department required the services of a capable Deputy Registrar for the Wellington district he was transferred from the Defence Department. He was later promoted to the position of Registrar in the Wellington district, and his next appointment was that of chief clerk in the Pensions Department, which had then grown to a considerable size. Upon the formation of the new Social Security Department he was appointed to undertake the duties of its first chief clerk.
