GAMING RAID
THREE MEN INVOLVED
Three men appeared" before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday as a result of a raid carried out by the police' on premises in Haining Street. William Young, laundryman, aged 54, who admitted using the premises as a common gaminghouse, was convicted and fined £25, and Herbert David Jamieson, a wharf labourer, aged 45, and Thomas Ballard/ a carpenter, aged 51, who admitted being on the premises, were each convicted and fined £2.
Sub-Inspector E. T. C. Turner said that when a search warrant was executed Young was found seated at a table on which were pakapoo bank results, marked and unmarked tickejts, and the usual marking apparatus. He admitted being ■ the occupier of the premises and using them as a common gaming-house.
Mr. Hamilton Mitchell, ■ who appeared for Young, said that the defendant had had a breakdown in health, had been forced to give up business, and had resorted to conducting the gaminghouse in order to keep going. He had been in- New Zealand for 30 years, and had not previously been • before a Court.
