ST. GEORGE'S DAY CEREMONY

Today is St. George's Day, and.this morning, it eleven o'clock, the Mayor (Mr,. T, C. A. Hislop), on'behalf of the menibers of ■ the several English county societies, laid at the War' Memorial a handsome wreath.of bay leaves and poppies, .bearing the inscription: "In proud remembrance of all English an'l New Zealand men and women who died in the present war and during or as a result of the Great Wai*. From the English men and women of Wellington." There was no ceremony - apart from the simple and reverent laying of the wreath, probably the first: to be laid in New Zealand in memory of those who fell in the two great wars.
