COMFORTS FOR TROOPS

Expenditure totalling £38,300 5s 4d for the benefit of the armed forces and. for patriotic purposes generally to March 11 was shown in a statement submitted to yesterday's meeting of I the National Patriotic Fund Board, j over which his Excellency the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Galway, presided. Receipts to the same date totalled £39,480 3s Bd, leaving a balance of £1179 18s. 4d. . ■■': The sum of £1729 11s 3d was spent on the provision of comforts for the members of the First Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who are now in the Middle East, and over £200 has been expended in providing comforts for troops in New Zealand. In addition to this amount substantial grants have been made to the V.M.C.A. and Salvation Army for the erection of the recreation huts at the camps in this country. Details of the receipts and expenditure are as follpws:— Receipts. By donations (general), GovernorGeneral's appeal, £18,337 18s Id; patriotic seal appeal, £8427 16s 7d; sick and wounded fund, £1748 3s 2d. To grants: V.M.C.A., £21,138 17s 8d; Salvation Army, £8435 os7d; Order of St. John and Red Cross, £1500. Comforts: H.M.S. Bank balance, £1140 18s 3d; cash in hand, £39 0s Id; total balance, £1179 18s 4d, The grant of £21,138 17s 8d to the V.M.C.A. includes Mr. T. H. Lowry's handsome gift of £10,000 for the V.M.C.A. base recreational hut overseas. The total grant to the V.M.C.A. and Salvation Army (£21,138 17s 8d and £8453 0s 7d) includes the cost of the erection of recreation huts for these institutions, the expenditure under this, head being £11,000. The board decided to make the V.M.C.A. and the overseas gifts commissioner its only expending agents overseas for the provision of comforts and recreation facilities. Provision for the sick and wounded is a separate and special responsibility, and this is under the care of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society.
