LABOUR UNITY
ANGLO-FRENCH CONFERENCE
(Britlsb Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, January 26. ' The second meeting of the AngloFrench Trade Union Council, representing the French Confederation of Labour and the British Trades Union Congress, was held in London today. M. Leon Jouhaux headed the French members, who sat in conference with the Trade Union Congress general council.
Welcoming the French representatives, Mr. W, Holmes, who presided, said that the visit was a further demonstration of the solidarity of the French and British labour movements, which had been linked together for many years now and had been further strengthened by the war.
M. Jouhaux, reciprocating the British greetings, emphasised the unity of purpose joining the French and British workers in the war against Hitlerism, and said that the French unions had thrown all their resources into the struggle and would flinch from no effort in ensuring the victory of free nations and leading to a just and lasting peace. Although the war called for gigantic sacrifices, these must not be allowed to obscure the need for social progress, he said.
The conference received reports on organisation and discussed questions of prices and cost of living and details of labour legislation.
