CHANGES IN STAFF

NEW ASSISTANT GENERAL

MANAGER

The Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) announced today that the Government had decided to accede to the request of Mr. H. Valentine to retire from the position of Second Assistant General Manage.;, New Zealand Railways, as from January 31. Mr. Valentine has completed nearly forty-two years' service with the Railway Department.

Mr. Sullivan stated that, although Mr. Valentine was retiring from the Railway Department, his services would be retained for a few months m the capacity of Government Purchase Officer in connection with the purchase of road motor services and the completion of negotiations with private owners which had not yet been finalised. The following promotions were also announced by Mr. Sullivan:— Mr. James Sawers, present District Traffic Manager at Auckland, to succeed Mr. E. Casey as, Assistant General Manager, as"from February 1. Mr. Casey is to succeed Mr. G. H. Mackley as General Manager on February Mr. G. S. Reid, assistant district traffic manager, Auckland, to be appointed district traffic manager, Auckland. Mr. A. E. Hargreaves, district traffic manager at Dunedin, to be transferred to the position of district traffic manager, Wellington. Mr. G. H. McLean, assistant district traffic manager, Christchurch, to oa appointed district traffic manager, Christchurch. Mr. R. J. A.
