RUGBY, January 25,

A substantial reduction in the number of private motor-cars on the roads has resulted from the increase in the vehicle licence fees and the strict rationing of petrol for private use. This is reflected in the returns of the licensing authorities for registrations for the current quarter. .

In the /London county ; area 44 per cent, fewer car licences were taken out than a year ago

Despite the increase in the rate of taxation the revenue from the motor tax fell by 17.5 per cent. Elsewhere in the country a similar effect was recorded. The Surrey County Council has licensed 42,352 private' cars this year, as against 67,838 last year.

AMSTERDAM.— Army leave has been restored.
