The destroyer Exmouth (Captain R. S. Benson) which has beeri sunk either by mine or torpedo was a flotilla leader and carried a complement of 175, including 14 officers. She is the fifth destroyer sunk since the outbreak of the war and the first with the loss of all hands.
The destroyer sank off the northeast coast of Scotland on Sunday.
The island of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides, has lost six of its young men in the Exmouth, making 19 since the war started. .
Captain Benson received the Distinguished Service Order last month for a successful action against submarines while commanding the Exmouth. . Since joining the Navy in 1905 the ships in which he served included H.M.S. Royal Oak and Iron Duke. He commanded the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla, on the China Station, from 1935,t0 1937.
One member of the. crew, ActingPetty Officer Webb, aged 33, received the Distinguished Service Medal in the New Year awards for skill against submarines. He leaves a, widow and six children. Another member of the crew was also. the . father of, six children.
