,By Telegraph—Press Assoeiatiou —Copyright.) NEW YORK, January 24. The situation in the Far : East is vapidly deteriorating, according to a message from Shanghai. The Japanese wrath over the Asama Maru incident, coupled with the lapsing of the United States commercial treaty this Friday, is playing into the hands of the extremists. There is an unpleasant tendency to, build up a belief that the United States is acting in concert with Britain. The Washington correspondent of the "New York Times" says the State Department's statement to the Japanese Ambassador; Mr. K. Horinouchi, that future commercial relations between America-and Japan after the expiration ■of the treaty depend on Japan's attitude to the rights of American citizens in China/ means that the United States intends to keep the pressure on Japan. The Administration is quietly discouraging Congressional action towards an embargo, at least at present, in view of the~ conversations the American Ambassador in. Japan, Mr. J. C. Grew, is conducting, but after January 26 the President will be able swiftly to levy duties and restrictions on imports in Japanese ships if the discrimination continues.
