AUSTRALIAN MINERS
THREAT OF STRIKE
ARBITRATION ABANDONED
(Received January 20, 1, p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The "Sydney Morning Herald" says a coal strike throughout the Commonwealth is threatened as a result of steps taken by representatives of the combined mining unions to abandon arbitration in favour of direct action. The representatives walked out of a meeting of the Coal Board of Reference.
It is understood the executive committee of the combined mining unions will now recommend to aggregate meetings of employees that if the Federal Government refuses to intervene for a settlement of disputes on the coalfields all mines should be thrown idle.
