BIG REGATTA
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Wellington's Anniversary Day yachting regatta, one of the longest-estab-lished ways of celebrating the birthday of the province, was begun today, with a full-sail north-westerly breeze and bright sunshine providing splendid yachting conditions. This year's regatta'is the biggest ever arranged, and will conclude on Monday afternoon with the free-for-all race to Petone, in which it is expected"*that nearly all of the boats competing in the earlier events, numbering more than 150 and including- many craft from other ports, will set sail across the harbour together. There were good fields in all today's sailing events, and local yachting enthusiasts who were not sailing showed particular interest in the Auckland 18----footers and smaller "Silver Fern" boats, of which there are none in use in Wellington. Also prominent among the competing boats were those which had come to Wellington for the four national sailing championships held earlier in the week. Their presence made the regatta representative of the whole of New Zealand. Included on today's programme were several Centennial championship races. Races started and finished off Clyde Quay Wharf under the direction /of a capable band of officials. The larger craft sailed oh the inverted V course from the start to the Coromandel buoy off Kaiwarra to buoys in Evans Bay and back the same way, and the smaller ones races in the inner harbour.
