(By Telegraph~Press Association—Copyrlght.|;
NEW YORK, Xanuary 17.f :< The Washington correspondent of , ? the Associated Press says it is authp*, . -, t ritatively learned that British ( and^ French proposals to triple the present orders of Americani*nade warplanes/ have been the subject of a conference - ';. between President Roosevelt, the > Secretary, of the Treasury; Mr.' Moi> , - genthau, and army and navy officials. According to reliable sources, ' the . ,j Allies have notified the United States that they are contemplating ordering' ! / for speedy delivery at least 8000 planes. "'. and even more aircraft1 motors. This would mean further expansion in the- ' \' industry, which is already working , J overtime on domestic and foreign military contracts. Officials have in-" ~■ i dicated strongly, however, that such •. expansion, if orderly, would be wel- ■ ;'. * corned as aiding national defence, but f"~ it would involve numerous problems,- ■'-'-
of taxation and financing. ' ■ '" o Engines would be the biggest prob- 1, -v lern, since a material expansion of the - ; existing plants promises to require '-'.{ foreign financing, which would rais» ■? tax complexities with the Treasury. ■> "> ,
