WELLINGTON RACES

CENTENNIAL MEETING

FIRST DAY AT TRENTHAM

PERFECT WEATHER

v(By "Binocular.") Marking the Centennial of the Dominion and of the province, the Wellington Racing Club's- Summer Meeting was ushered in at Trentham today on a very auspicious note, the .■weather being brilliantly - fine and the, attendance large. It was one of the . most perfect Cup days in the history "of racing at Trentham. With but one exception, the fields for the various events paraded particularly strong, that of the Centennial Cup, which carried the rich prize of £-3000 and a gold cup valued at £200, being the feature of the afternoon. Included were the cream of the open handicappers of the Dominion, and had its first representative in the race, the former New Zealander Malagigi. The track was in splendid order, the regular watering for the past six weeks and the rain last weekend providing going with" the sting out of it, instead of what might otherwise have been a flint-hard surface. Results and comment on the running . to time of going to press were: — TRENTHAM HIGHWEIGHT, £350; 1 mile. - B—3-D. E. Wanklyn's br g Lockit, by Siegfried—Polly Peachum, syrs, 9.12 (R. J. Some considerable delay was entailed in getting the Trentham Highweight field away, and when the tapes finally lifted Limbohm was t badly left, and Gay Fox was also slow to move. However, Lockit won too well for any excuses for the beatgn lqt. ... - -When "the fielr) "had" settled down Harina, Lockit, and Hunting Moments were in the leading division; and with heads straightened out for home Lockit immediately ran through to win •with something in hand. Thrasos, handy all the way, finished really well; to get White Rajah in the last few strides for second money, with Harina weakening to fourth. War Lap and . Small Boy, both of whom played up' at the start, ran good races, but Gay Fox and Raana were never dangerous. Oh the face of his performance Lockit will "come into favour for the.Douro Cup. Kalika was always near the rear. WELLINGTON STAKES, £700; for " two- and three-year-olds; 5 furlongs. I—l—l. Lupton'S b c Sir Beau, by Beau Pere—Rose ' Bay, 2yrs, car. 7.4 <H. Won. by four lengths; third horse .half a neck away. Time, 59£ sec. v , Sir Beau, the favourite for the Wei-, lington Stakes, proved that he was a I youngster above the ordinary when he ran right away from his four op-' ponents in the final furlong. He allowed Absolve and Doria to set the pace, but he,was always within striking distance, and when asked a ques- 1 tion easily settled the issue. Kentucky ' finished on very solidly to beat Doria, who had every chance. Absolve weakened to fourth, with Lambourn, who is as yet inexperienced, last. APPRENTICES' PLATE, £300; 7 furlongs. 6^-5—G. Gould's eh g Not Out, by Winning Hit—Dutch Money, 3yrs, 7.11 (M. Billington) 1 9—lo—D, P. Wilson's br f Hearth, by Paladin—Kerbside, 3yrs, 7.8 (L. Clutterbuck) 2 2 —2 —J. P. '■'-'■ . ■•■ ■"■■■: ■' .•. ■ (Winner trained by F. A. Roberts, Riccarton). . ' Won by a length; third horse a head away. Time, Imin 26£ sec. . . : . Two South Islanders fought out the . finish of the Apprentices' Plate, Not Out proving the winner with the ' much-travelled Hearth runner-up. The former* was always handy to the leader, Wings of Song, and when the latter -compounded- Not Out ran to the front and was never in danger of defeat; Hearth and Meadow, the latter having, got away well from the , centre of the field, fought out. the minor placings, with Serenata a creditable fourth. Wings of Song showed all his customary brilliance but failed to stay. Classform was never actually dangerous, but Lady Tinkle showed a -lot of pace in the middle stages and should be improved with' ' the run: Veldette was pulled up when her -saddle slipped^l while -Greatford fell, breaking a leg.

FITZHERBERT HANDICAP, £350; for two-year-olds; 5 furlongs. 7 —6— B. Dickson arid W. Patterson's b f Stencil, by Rulanut— I Artistry, 8.2 (G. R. Tattersall) l 4 —4—M. C. Mills, Hawera). — ■ '■' ~; Won by a length and a half, third horse a head away. Time, Imin lsec. . Although he lost his "position after 1 getting away well, Stencil was- handy at the home turn in'-the .FitzherbertHandicap, and he finished too well for' Chary, who had taken charge at the distance. Shikari, although still somewhat green, was a creditable third, With Grandora, who was a shade unlucky, a good fourth.. Triple Crowyi and Retrogression both showed early speed, but weakened, whereas Chablis finished well from some distance back. Don't Forget, the favourite, had every chance.
