ARTESIAN WATER
THE HUTT SUPPLIES
"DIFFERENCE OF OPINION"
An old topic was revived, without result, at the meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Qpuncil - on - Monday, when the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, reported that he and Mr. G. London, Mayor of Petone, had been appointed by the Petone-Lower Hutt joint committee to act on the drafting committee set up to prepare legislation for the conservation of artesian water sup-
plies.
The engineer reported that during November 49,149,570 gallons of water had been used,.. compared with 43.740,000 gallons in November, 1938.
Councillor Hall remarked that the council had made a mistake in withdrawing from the City and Suburban Water Board. The time ..might come when the council would need to consider a gravity scheme.
The Mayor said it was a question in which there was room for difference v o£ opinion. He held no hard or fast opinion on the subject and would be quite prepared to give the council an opportunity of reopening the question for discussion. He had consulted his two predecessors in the Mayoral chair on the subject and had found they differed from one another. There was also a difference in engineering opinion. The present engineer, Mr. H. R. Back, had shown that under a gravity scheme the water would be more costly, and that in an. emergency water could be pumped from the Hutt River.
