HERE and THERE-

"China" Tea for Bride-elect

A Festive Final Meeting,

Miss Eileen Clark, whose marriage will take place early in the New Year, was the guest of honour at a "china tea," given by Mrs. Hyde on Monday at her residence in Palmer Street. Bridge was played. Musical items were given by Miss Clark and Mies Hickmott.

Gifts Exchanged. A meeting of the Reikorangi-Waika-nae Women's Institute was held at Waikanae on Thursday, when Mrs. G. A. Monk presided, but owing to very wet weather the attendance was rather small. Motions of sympathy were passed to Mrs. Hume and Mis. Baughen, the members standing in silence. Mrs. Monk read some interesting passages from "Brave Days,'" and Dr. Atmore spoke in reference to the appeal for Christmas cheer for the soldiers. Presents were exchanged between members. The competitions results were as follows:—Best bloom, Miss Agnes Mowbray 1, Miss M. Monk 2, Miss G. Mowbray 3; best vegetable. Miss G. Mowbray 1, Mrs. G. A. Monk 2.

Levin Women's Institute. There was an excellent attendance of members at the December meeting of the Levin Women's Institute. The president, Mrs. Powell, was in the chair. An instructive demonstration of floral work was given by Mrs. Evans. The monthly competitions resulted as follows: —Christmas novelty, Mrs. Rankin 1 and 2, and Mrs. Taylor 3; plain biscuits (four varieties), Mrs. Rankin 1, Mrs. Maddings 2, and Mrs. Burt 3. A social competition was won by Mrs. Bubb and enjoyable vocal duets were contributed by Miss Bradley and Mrs. Inglis. Arrangements were made to take charge of a stall at the coming local A. and P. Show for the sale of articles made by the inmates of the Institute for the Blind. The supper hostesses were Mesdames Boyer, Hercock, Kaley, and McAncny.

The Waiwhetu Townswomen's Guild recently held its final meeting of the year in St. Paul's. Hall, which was crowded with memoers and friends. Representatives were present from the Lower Hutt and Karori Guilds, and guests and members were welcomed by the president. The floral decorations, which included a beautiful decorated basket on the stage, were the work of the garden circle, and added a festive appearance to the hall. There was a large display of handcrafts, the result of five months' work by the arts and crafts circle. Two songs were rendered by a trio from the Epuni Institute, led by Mrs. Sproull, the pianist being Mrs. T. C. Forrester. They were presented with shoulder sprays. Several amusing competitions were held, afternoon tea was served, and a humorous play, "Cousin Lucy," was presented by the drama circle. A vote of thanks was extended to Mr. and Mrs. Rushton for the decorated Christmas cake which they had presented to the guild. The president wished all members the compliments of the season, and bouquets of red and white roses made by Mrs. Willis, were presented to the president, vice-president, and secretary by Barbara Meiklejohn. A presentation was also made to Mrs. Angus by the arts and crafts circle in appreciation of her help at circle meetings. The prize for the "best flowers in my garden" was awarded to Mrs. Willis.

Exhibition Party.

Mrs. J. T. Martin, who is a member of the executive committee of the women's section, Centennial Exhibition, entertained a number of friends at the Exhibition yesterday afternoon. Before tea, which the party had in the Exhibition restaurant, they viewed the dress parade of period frocks presented in the lecture hall of the women's section.
