After having served on the Wellington Education Board since 1930, Mr. W. H. Jackson announced his resignation at today's meeting of the board and it will take effect immediately. The chairman and secretary were, empowered to take the necessary steps for an election to ,fill the vacancy.
The chairman, Mr.. W. V. Dyer, paid tribute to Mr. Jackson's many years of work m the cause of education, particularly in the Masterton district. Mr. Jackson, he said, had had a great record as a schoolmaster and an even greater record in activities outside the school. He was richly entitled to a well-earnest rest, and the board would place on record its appreciation of his services.
Mr. Jackson's record was unique, said Mr. J. J. Clark, since he had been headmaster and Mayor at Masterton at the same time, causing many Acts to be searched to see if such a thing were legal. He had been an outstanding man, enjoying the confidence of teachers and the people alike.
All members of the board paid tribute to Mr. Jackson's work, Mr. W. W. Bird remarking that the retiring member actually ' was Masterton, both from a scholastic and civic point of view.
Mr. Jackson's activities in connection with the cadet movement were stressed by Colonel T. W. McDonald.
Masterton had become the hub of education through Mr. Jackson's activities, another member said.
In returning thanks, Mr. Jackson gave an interesting sketch of his activities in Masterton since 1889, when he became headmaster of the school. He intends to retire to Auckland.
