OVERTIME WORK
PLUMBERS' APPRENTICES
An amendment to the Wellington plumbers' and gasfitters' apprenticeship order prohibiting overtime work by all apprentices unless under the constant supervision of competent journeymen was recently sought, by the workers in the Industrial Magistrate's Court. It was admitted by the employers that some restriction was reasonable, but they proposed that the provision should not be made to apply to sixth-year apprentices.
Mr. J. A. Gilmour. 5.M.,; has carefully considered the existing circumstances and in a reserved judgment issued today he has adopted the employers' proposal and amended the apprenticeship order by adding the following clause: "Except in the case of an apprentice who has served five years no apprentice shall be permitted to work overtime unless he is under the constant supervision of a competent tradesman."
