Melbourne City Council's "aldermen" have been abolished by Parliament, and now it has only "Councillors." A special Constitution Act of 1842 provided that the senior councillor of each of the eight wards held this honorary title, but this Act has been repealed and the city affairs are controlled by the Local Government Act, which coders all governing bodies to the State.
