COLLEGIATE CHAPEL

WEDDING

The beautiful chapel at the Collegiate School was fragrant with spring blossoms on Monday morning for the wedding of an old boy of the school, Mr. Charles Hartley Wicksteed, only son of Mrs. J. L. Wicksteed and Mr. A. S. Wicksteed, and Lorraine, only daughter of Mrs. J. Retallick and the late Mr. W. J. Watkins, of North Canterbury. The bride, who was escorted by her uncle, Mr. A. H. McLean, wore a smart day frock of chartreuse green, with embroidered yoke and sleeves and tiny cape of grape-juice toned velvet. The same shade of velvet composed the flower,s of her toque and also the eye veil/ Miss Joyce O'Neill was bridesmaid wearing a navy and i white American figured ensemble, and navy hat. Both wore sprays of orchids grown by Mrs. O'Neill. Mr. Wilson Handley attended the bridegroom, and the Rev. H. W. Austin performed the' ceremony, with Mr. L. Craig at the organ. Mrs. Retallick received her guests at Foster's Hotel after the ceremony, wearing a black romaine ensemble, with black hat and fox furs. Mrs. ! A. H. McLean, aunt of the bride, wore black stiffened chiffon of jersey sheer, with multi-colour.cd lattice yoke, and quilted "pancake" hat. Mr. and Mrs. Wicksteed's home will be. at Te Kuiti. Sherry Party. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. McLean entertained a large number of friends at a sherry party late on Saturday afternoon in honour of their niece, Miss Lorraine Watkins, Mrs. P. A. O'Neill and her daughters were hostesses in the afternoon at a "kitchen" tea for Miss Watkins. Party for Bride-to-be. The committee of the young conj tingent of the Victoria League entertained a past honorary secretary, Miss Lorraine Watkins,' on the eve of her marriage to > Mr. Hartley Wicksteed, at an enjoyable afternoon tea party held at the D.I.C. A gift and a dainty spray with the best wishes of the members were presented to the guest of honour. Children's Garden. Circle. Two glorious days fell to the lot of many hundreds of people interested in the Children's Garden Circle annual show and birthday party. This year both were held at the Wanganui racecourse. Mrs. Knox Gilmer came especially from Wellington to open the show, and Mrs. J. Connor again made and decorated a magnificent cake in the form of a crinoline lady three feet high. On the second day of the show the birthday was celebrated with a fancy dress and floral' parade, Punch and Judy show, and folk and ballet dances on the lawn. A boy won the prize for the most decorative exhibit, and a girl for the best dish garden. These were just two of many dozens of awards. On Sunday the organisers, demonstrators, .and other officials to the number of over 70, were the guests of Mr. Hope Gibbons and Miss Gibbons at afternoon tea, at their home, "Hikurangi." The weather was again perfect. The "boys' choir," under Mr. Kitson, sang a number of appropriate numbers. Women's National Auxiliary Reserve. A largely-attended meeting of women from many organisations in Patea was held during last week, and formed themselves into a women's national auxiliary reserve, with the Mayoress, Mrs. E. F. Hemmingway, as president, and Mrs. F. Naismith as vice-presi-dent. Card Party. The women members of the Gonville Croquet Club had their services to the club and its social activities very agreeably , recognised recently when the men members entertained them at a card party in the Victoria Hall. Big fires and plenty of gay spring blooms made the hall very attractive. The prize winners were Mesdames Chapman and Guthrie, Miss Gerrie, and Mr. B. Hoar. Personal. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. McLean, and Mrs. J. Retallick (Christchurch) visited Wellington yesterday to attend the Allison—Gillespie wedding. Mrs. E. Gower and Mrs. J. Smith, who have been the guests of Mr. and Miss Hope Gibbons, have returned to the Hutt.
