Hataitai Glee Club Concert.

The engagement is announced be- I tween Herbert Charles Rube Gillman, Royal Artillery, only son of the late General Sir Webb Gillman, X.C.8., K.C.M.G., D.5.0., and of Lady Gillman, of the Manor House, Bampton, Oxfordshire, and Catherine Stuart Holmes, younger daughter of the late Lieut.-Colonel Mathew Holmes, of Wellington, and of Mrs. Mathew Holmes, of 27 Burnsall Street, London, 5.W.3, states "The Post's" London correspondent. Karori Sale of Work. At 2 p.m. today Mrs. Sprott opened a sale of work in the Parish Hall, Karori, in aid of the St. Mary's Church tennis court funds. The sale will continue at the hall this evening, i when a concert will be presented at 8 o'clock. Working For Maori Mission. Miss Olive Morgan, of Brooklyn, has left to do Maori missionary work for the church of England in the Diocese of Waiapu. Before leaving the district she was the recipient of many useful gifts, including a travelling bag from the scholars and teachers of St. Matthew's Sunday School, and a wellstocked first-aid kit from the Brooklyn St. John Home Nursing Division, of which she has been a member since its inception. Hockey Season Ends. The Wellington Women's Hockey Association gave a fitting finale to the season yesterday evening, when over fifty players met at a social in the Tararua Tramping Club's rooms. Games and singing were held, and before supper was served by members of the committee, Miss M. Wilkins (president of the W.W.H.A.) presented the winners of the respective grades with their cups. The committee responsible for the evening's success were Mesdames Sundgren (secretary), J. R. Lamason, A. Smith, M. Black, and the Misses J. F. Yeatnian, J. Walker, M. Barnard, S. Jackson, and Mr. S. Brough, (Umpires' Association). Those present included the Misses A. Yorston, and M. Kilby (New Zealand Association), J. Hatcher, P. Pilcher, B. Stewart, M. Pownall, J. Carson, J. Johnstone, O. Whitelaw, C. Baker, E. and M. Andrew, R. Walker, H. McLellan, M. Simpson, J. Mack, D. Roberts, I. Mouatt, D. DeCent, J. Prestney, S. Sundgren, and Messrs. J. C. Cusack, J. Atkins, and S. Brough. Engagement Party. About thirty guests gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Breeze on Monday night to celebrate the engagement of their younger daughter, Phyllis, to William Edwin Shaw, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Shaw, of Dunedin (late of Wellington). The celebration took the form of a sherry party, after "which some of the guests adjourned to dance at the Majestic Cabaret. Better Attendance. The Kilbirnie auxiliary branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, held its usual card evening at the clubrooms, Bay Road, last night, and the committee was gratified to welcome an improved attendance. Mrs. P. Wilkinson and Mr. R. D. Tucker, won at bridge, Mesdames K. Tasker and M. C. McLeod, at "500," and competitions, were won by Messrs. R. McCaul and* G. d'Emden. Supper was served during tbe interval.

I In order to help the interests of the League of Mothers at Hataitai, the Women's Glee Club organised a concert which proved a most decided success. . The concert was held in the Methodist Parish Hall. The choir, ably conducted by Mrs. H. E. Moston, was in excellent form and sang with considerable grace of performance and appreciation of the spirit of the words and music. Their numbers covered a wide field and were very well chosen. There were also items given by a sextet and a trio, and solos were contributed by Mrs. G. Carpenter, Mrs. Edmonds, Mrs. B. Smith, Mrs. C. Mclntyre. The accompanists were Mesdames Watson and Anderson. Mrs. C. Mclntyre gave a recitation and the finale was the playlet "Claton's," produced by Mrs. N. Jack and played by Mrs. J. Gibson, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. C. Chambers, Mrs. C. Mclntyre, Misses M. Henslow, Anne White, Jill Watson, and Mesdames G. Carpenter, Gatehouse, and Watson. Seatoun Labour Social. The Seatoun and Bays' branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, held a social and dance at the Seatoun Kiosk last night. The president, Mrs. Catherine Fellows, presided and. there were many friends and supporters present. Items were given by Mr. D. Martin and a good dance band was in attendance. Mrs. D. Martin presided at the piano. Dancing was the main feature of the evening and games and competitions were also enjoyed. "Action Songs" were very popular. Mr. E. Burke was an efficient master of ceremonies. Country Women Prepare. Paekakariki Women's Institute held a I meeting recently. The president, Mrs. Jackson, presided. A letter was re- \ ceived from the Dominion Federation asking the institute to arrange to accommodate" and provide food for re- I fugees in case of evacuation of cities, The writer said the value of the scheme lay in being prepared beforehand. It was agreed to carry out this important work. Mrs. Hume, president of the Plimmerton Institute unveiled the institute's new banner. Mrs. Hume congratulated Mrs. Gourley on her work. A vote of thanks was given to the donor of the banner. A seagrass set of six cups and saucers and tray, made by Mrs. Gourley for the institute to be sent to the Centennial Exhibition, was very much admired. Mrs. Hume judged the sugar-bag cushion worked in wool. Mrs. Gourley gained first place and Mrs. Rankin, second. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Redcliff, Mrs. A. Tutt, and Mrs. Rankin. Victoria League Welcome. Spring flowers were arranged about the Victoria League rooms yesterday when new members were welcomed by the committee at a morning tea. A luncheon was held later in the day for new members who were unable to attend the previous function. Guests were welcomed by Mrs. L. O. H. Tripp, acting president, who emphasised the league's readiness to serve in whatever way it could. It was announced that a reception for the president, Mrs. J. A. Doctor, would be held in the E.S.U rooms on September 27. Among the new members present were Mesdames Wright, W. McLeod, L. Hill, and W. McNab, and Misses Christophers, 'Button, Stevenson, and Ross.
