SPRING BLOOMS

HUTT VALLEY SHOW

Spring blooms are probably the most popular blooms of .the year, and to day's show in the Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt, held under the auspices of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society, which was opened this afternoon by his Excellency Lord Galway, should prov« specially attractive. The season, cool and dair.3, with an absence of wind, has suitea the growth of daffodils, and therefore this portion 6i the display has probably never been equalled in the Valley. The hall is attractively laid out with low bed's of daffodils and Iceland poppies, among which several stands for exhibition only stand out prominently. Mr. A. J. Poole has a stand in front of the plat-, form, a position of prominence it well merits. It is flanked on either side with beds of cyclamen, also shown by Mr. Poole. Another notable stand •is provided by the Garden Circle. Once more one of the major attractions of the show Mrs. Gower's novelty stall. The Dominion has been canvassed from, end to end to provide exhibits, and a close inspection of this display will repay visitors. Among the novelties are Diplolaena Gladiflora, flowering for probably the first time in New Zealand; a Tasmanian seedling daffodil of unique colour lent by Mr. Poole; a true yellow gum. Eucalipti Pressiana; a sand wattle which is specially useful for preventing wind erosion of sandy soil. The plant from which.the flowers were taken covers 50ft by 45ft,' and rises only 12ft in height,- the stem creeping along the ground. There are seven or eight varieties of Banksia of special value as honey plants, attractive to tuis and bellbirds. These will grow anywhere, even in the most exposed positions. There is showing also Osmanthus Devalyesi,; a scented flowering shrub. The decorative. section of the show shows-evidence of great thought, and competition is : most keen

The show will be open this evening and tomorrow afternoon and evening. ■
