LAWN TENNIS
WELLINGTON CLUB
Reference to the recent decision of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association .to increase the affiliation fee and the charges for inter-club competitions was made by Mr. H. L. Wise, chairman of the club's management committee, at the annual meeting of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Club, held recently. He stressed the necessity for such increases to put the association's finances on a sounder footing, and said that the position of the club would enable the increases to be met without the necessity for any alteration in the subscription of members.
It had been decided by the management committee that all of the club's courts would be top-dressed during the season, he said.
In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president, Dr. A. N. Slater, made reference to the healthy state of the club's finances and the success of its members in the interclub matches. He also mentioned the success that had attended club members in outside tournaments, and the inclusion of D. C. Coombe in the New Zealand Davis Cup team.
The following officers were elected: — President, Dr. A. N. Slater; vice-presi-dents. Miss K. M. Nunneley, Mrs. Coombe, Messrs. W. J. Melody, P. C. Rose, and A. J. Eulogistic references were made to the work of the retiring secretary. Mr. J. Robb, and to his untiring efforts on the club's behalf.
A notice of motion, moved by Mr. Wise, to provide for the creation of a non-playing membership for those desiring to retain their association with the club at a nominal fee. was carried unanimously.
The president referred to the disproportionate strength of men's and women's membership, and said he hoped the incoming committee would give attention to the desirability of extending the women's membership.
Opening day was fixed for Saturday September 16.
