CALM URGED
POLISH BROADCAST
NO AGREEMENT TO AN ANSCHLUSS
(Received August 25, 2.10 p.m.)
WARSAW, August 24. Official quarters are not concerned over Hen- Foerster's new status.
It is stated that Poland will not agree to an anschluss (union with Germany), but that she will not place difficulties in the way of free cultural development of Germans in the Free City, provided Polish minority rights are respected in the light of these principles. The Government considers that Danzig's form of Government is of secondary importance.
The shops are crowded with people seeking gas masks and commodities. The Government made a broadcast exhorting the population to keep calm and stating that adequate supplies will be available for all.
It is impossible now to buy first-aid sets.
Germany has informed the Polish Government that the light cruiser Koenigsberg will not visit Danzig on August 27, as was arranged, but that the training ship Schleswig Holstein will come instead. The officers will visit M. Chodacki, the Polish Commissioner, according to the original plan.
