LEADING COUNTIES BEATEN

Results of the latest series of county cricket matches enabled Gloucestershire to improve their position. Despite the absence of Hammond and Goddard, who were playing in the Test at the Oval, Gloucestershire beat Middlesex (who were without Compton) by 186 runs. Yorkshire, who contributed Hutton and Wood to the Test team, were beaten by Essex by an innings and 4 runs Essex were without the services of Nichols, the wellknown all-rounder. An outstanding individual performance was that of Watts (Surrey), who took all ten wickets in Warwickshire's second innings. (Received August 23, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 22. Derbyshire v. Nottinghamshire, at Ilkeston— Derbyshire, 319 (G. Pope 121) and 148 (Voce four for 41). Nottinghamshire. 185 and 135 (G. Pope four for 21). Derbyshire won by 147 runs. Glamorgan v. Northamptonshire, at Cardiff.—Northamptonshire, 369 for seven, declared (Dixon 88, O'Brien 90) and 156 for eight, declared (Matthews five for 36). Glamorgan, 296 (Smart 79) and 222 for seven (E. Davies 85). Northamptonshire won on the first innings. Gloucestershire v. Middlesex, at Cheltenham. — Gloucestershire, 214 (Sims seven for 109) and 327 for seven, declared (Crapp 101). Middlesex. 247 (Robertson 87) and 108 (Sinfield six for 48). Gloucestershire won by 186 runs. Hampshire v. Somerset, at Bournemouth. —Somerset, 453 for eight, declared (Gimblett 83. Buse 79, Mcßae 96). Hampshire. 161 (Hazel! six for 60). and. following on, 230 (McCorkell 107; Mayer six for 48). Somerset won by an innings and 62 runs.

Lancashire v. Kent, at Manchester. —Kent, 215 (Ames 108; Phillipson six for 70) and 244 (Valentine 119; Phillipson six for 76). Lancashire, 252 (Washbrook 79) and 218 for six (Place 86). Lancashire won by four wickets.

Sussex v. Worcestershire, at Eastbourne. —Worcestershire. 372 and 302 for six, declared (King 118). Sussex, 475 for nine, declared (J. Parks 115 not out. Bartlett 89) and 200 for two. Sussex won by eight wickets.

Warwickshire v. Surrey, at Birmingham.—Surrey. 336 (Fishlock 91). Warwickshire, 115 (Brown six for 46), and, following on. 220 (Watts ten for 67). Surrey won by an innings'and 1 run.
