GERMAN EFFORTS OVER DANZIG
INCREASING PRESSURE
LONDON UNPERTURBED
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Cops'rip;ht.) LONDON. August 17. Germany is daily increasing- her efforts to drive Europe into an extremity of nervous tension as a preliminary to a final showdown over Danzig. Poland will have a repetition of last year's tactics, hut in a more extreme form. The democracies are expected to be reduced to such a state of bewilderment in the next few weeks that they will be prepared for another Munich. The correspondent of the Associated Press in Berlin says that Germany has not yet banged the door to an agreement with Poland. The German newspapers declare that the Polish Corridor must figure in future discussions. Officials in London and the general public are unperturbed by the growing European tension, and neither the Prime Minister nor the Foreign Secretary intend to break their holiday before next week. The seaside resorts are crowded with people, who are equally resolved not to allow war scares to spoil their enjoyment. Even the drama-tie appearance of scores of French bombers over London evolved only momentary interest. Foreigners who have had long residence'in Germany note fhe growth of public uneasiness as the Press campaign follows Hie lines of last year's crisis. The man in the street is pinning his faith in the belief that the Fuhrer is planning a dramatic move which will result in a bloodless solution of the Danzig problem. The strength of the democracies is now becoming realised. The majority of Germans do not want war, which might bring disaster to the nation. France is slightly more optimistic as reports arrive concerning the anxiety in Germany.' The Government is following with interest all suggestions for a five-PoAver conference, but it will not participate unless Poland is agreeable. The feeling of suspense is reflected in the Italian newspapers, which generally admit that the tension has most dangerous possibilities.
