MANY MESSAGES

WIDESPREAD SYMPATHY

Hundreds of messages of sympathy and good wishes arrived for Mr. Savage yesterday. . They included one from his Excellency the GovernorGeneral (Lord Galway), who is at Apia, from the Prime Minister of Great Britain (Mr. Neville Chamberlain), and from Mr. R. G. Menzies, Prime Minister of Australia. There were other messages from distant parts of the Empire and from all! over New Zealand, and they all ex- j pressed the hope that Mr. Savage's! recovery would be .speedy and complete. One»of the first messages to be received from overseas ■ was that from Mr. Chamberlain. It offered Mr. Savage in behalf of Mr. Chamberlain and his colleagues their sympathy in his illness and expressed the hope that he would be speedily restored to health. Messages were also received from the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. flash), the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London (Mr. W. J. Jordan), and from the Minister of Lands (the Bon. F. Langstone). Throughout the 3ay and last night telegrams from in- j iividuals and organisations in all parts i 3f New Zealand continued to stream in. i [n addition, the Prime Minister's Department was inundated with inquiries Dy telephone from people in all walks jf life and in all parts of the Dominion. Many of the inquirers were mder the misapprehension that Mr. Savage had undergone his operation yesterday morning. Quite apart from the hundreds of Messages that' reached the Prime Minister's office in Parliament Buildngs, many others were addressed to Vlr. Savage's residence in Northland md to Lewisham Hospital, where he is a patient.
