PROGRESS REPORTED

THE NEXT SUMMER SCHOOL

The W.E.A. District Council for the Victoria College district met recently, Mr. M. Riske presiding over a good attendance. Mr. G. Lawn was welcomed to the council as representative for the Wetsport branch. Affiliation was granted to the Dental Assistants' Union, bringing the affiliations up to 28.

Reports from the tutor-organisers revealed good work in progress in rural and suburban study groups covering a wide range of subjects. A special feature this year is the large number of women's groups throughout the country taking W.E.A. courses in (iThe Pacific and Its Problems," ""New Zealand Today and Tomorrow," bt early New Zealand history, in preparation for the Pan-Pacific Women's Conference to be held in New Zealand next year. City classes have been: well maintained throughout the winer, Psychology and Current History keeping the lead in popularity. A number of trade unions are taking advantage of the panel of lecturers especially arranged by the W.E.A. for lectures at trade union meetings. . The W.E.A. Summer School received special consideration, and the plans are well advanced. The Feilding Agricultural High School is to be the site for the second year in succession, last year's summer school having proved an outstanding Success. It was .reported that the principal courses of lectures at the school would be taken by Professor Sewell (of Auckland University), on "The Drama of Social Rfe< volution," End by Dr. H. N. Parton (of Canterbury College), on "Science in the Modern World." Study groups would also be provided in psychology and international issues. It was /decided to hold the school from December 26 to January 2.

An informal W.E.A. Debating and Public Speaking Club has been set up, and is meeting with enthusiastic interest. It is .hoped to build the club into a regular meeting ground for all W.E.A. students.

Mrs. H. G. Richardson was appointed W.E.A. delegate to meetings of women in connection with the Women's World Peace Congress to be held in Cuba. It was also decided to support the petition organised by the National Peace Council calling for a new world conference.
