THE GRAND NATIONALS

FINAL ACCEPTANCE

NINE REMAIN IN STEEPLES

There has been the usual further thinning- out in the leading events at the final acceptance for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting, which opens next Tuesday, but the fields left are of very. satisfactory dimensions for interesting racing. The actual numerical strength of the three main races promises to be very much as it was last year. A field of nine remains in the Grand National Steeplechase, the only further defections being Power Chief (who was destroyed last Saturday), Black Banner'and Burwood (who have broken down), and Pandine (who remains in the field for the shorter Enfield Steeples). The acceptance for this race last year was twelve. There have been only five further defections in the Winter Cup (Ned Cuttle, Meamea, Yours Truly, The Wrecker, and Wagner), leaving a jiresent field of 21, which is one larger at this stage than twelve months ago. Majority will now represent his stable in this race and Ned Cuttle will contest the Paparua Handicap. Meamea is an unexpected absentee, as he was considered to hold quite a good chance of success. ' The Grand National Hurdles has drawn an acceptance of 17, which is one less than, last year. Those who fell out at the payment. were Silver Sight, Cottingham, Peter Beckford, Power Chief, Vantoon, Tutor, and Bit o' Blue. It was expected that Peter Beckford, Vantoon, and Tutor would hold their place at this stage, but the defection of Peter Beckford at least gives the stable clue to Charade's chance. The total acceptance for the first day this year is 139, which is two more than twelve months ago. Two fields largely in excess of last year are those for the Paparua Handicap * and the Cashmere Plate. The acceptances (per Press Association) are as follows: — 11.32 TRIAL HURDLES, £300; 1% miles.
