LIKELY JUVENILES

A SPEEDY AUTO PAY COLT

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, August 3

For two-year-olds to break 25sec on a soft t&ck at this time of the year is out of the ordinary, but this is what was credited to Merrymeer and Lovaals at Takanini early this week. The former, a filly by Vermeer out of Merry Way, has developed nicely and will be ready for early two-year-old racing. . , ..,• Lovaals is progressing splendidly also and she is bred well enough to win her share of races. As her name suggests, she is by Vaals from Lomint and is therefore a sister to the rather disappointing Valmint. Lovaals comes from a good family, her dam being a sister to the well*performed Catoma and Chamour and a half-sister to Jewelled Girdle. After his double win in sprint class at Whangarei, it looked as if Brazilian was likely to go on to a further string of successes, but it was not to be. The Australian-bred gelding was unlucky at his next start, at the Waiknto Winter Meeting, but he then again failed at his three concluding starts of the season. However, he has freshened up again and he may be a good horse to follow.

A disappointment throughout the jumping season was Adsum. His efforts in the unusual role of hurdler earlier in the season indicated that he might be a force to be reckoned with in cross-country events, but he has failed all along the line and it is going to be a task to place him to give him a winning chance. His next appearance will be at the Pakuranga fixture this month and perhaps the drop in class Will assist him to make a better showing.

Yet another maiden performer who is going to make races in this class very difficult to win ill the province during the next few months Is Every Port, who is doing good work at headquarters. She has raced only twice in her two seasons on the Turf and so, at four years, she should show the benefit of this patient policy. She is by Winning Hit, very few of whose progeny make their way to the Auckland district, and her dam is a sister to those fine gallopers Waterline and Fast Passage. A new sire to be represented in the Auckland district this season will be Autopay, once a well-known sprinter in southern centres. His two-year-eld colt out of Gortyn is to race as Galula Bay and that he is able to go fast he indicated by shaping well in a sprint a few mornings ago. That Calula Bay should have speed is not surprising, and it looks as if he will not take long to come to hand. He is a half-brother to Sabatini.

F. Davis's string of three-year-olds in Silver-Stick, Lutanist, and Pern are now beginning to come to' hand and they should be ready for the spring campaign. Their three furlongs sprint this week was impressive, for they were not extended and it seemed a& if they could have done very fast time had they been required. Both SilverStick and Lutanist, winners at Ellerslie last season, should develop into top class.

One of the big fancies for thd Fakuranga Hunt Cup this month is going to be Mahala, who was recently qualified. She defeated Biform and London, earlier winter winners, at Tauranga a couple of months ago and this caused her to be heavily supported a week afterwards at Te Awamutu, but she was hopelessly out of' the contest for the first mile, though she then came home strongly to be almost level with the third horse. She shaped well over the Ellerslie country during the last Great Northern Meeting and she appears to be a fine stayer.
