STRATFORD RACING CLUB
As a result of being allotted an unfavourable date for the one-day meeting in the autumn, the Stratford Racing Club's year was not quite so successful as was the previous year. After allowing £642 for depreciation; however, the profit is show.n as £1060. At the annual meeting of members this week, the president, Mr. J. D. Malone,. said he hoped better results would be obtained from the one-day meeting this year, as the club had obtained a date for a spring fixture to be held early in November. A spring fixture was not at present held in Taranaki, said Mr. Malone, and he did not think there were any factors which would militate against the success of the meeting, with the exception of the weather. The date chosen would not conflict with agricultural and pastoral shows in the province. Dealing with finances, the treasurer, Mr. R. R. Tyrer, said that, though the profit for the past year was about £500 less than that made the year before there was a considerable amount expended on improyement work during the past season which more than compensated for the deficiency. He mentioned that £55 had already been paid in social security tax. an imposition that was criticised by members.
G. H. Humphries applied for and was granted a jockey's licence for the new season, but has since withdrawn it, as he has decided definitely to give up riding. He will figure as an owner next week, as he recently purchased from J. B. Pearson a four-year-old filly by Paper Money from Air Valve, who shows a lot of promise.
