NO INCREASE YET
TAXI FARES
THE LOCAL POSITION
Although it is anticipated that the increased petrol tax will mean an added cost to taxi companies in Wellington of between £4000 and £5000 a year, it is not expected that there will be any immediate increase in the fares charged to the public. That was the view expressed by the manager of a leading taxi firrrk today.
The manager added that in his opinion, and in the opinion of others, the taxi business in Wellington was over-organised, and if a plan of coordinating the various services were adopted it would be possible to reduce costs to such an extent that the additional burden of the new tax could be met comfortably. At the same time it would be possible to give the public a more efficient service.
