(Recei\ red August 3, noon.)
SAN FRANCISCO, August 2.
The Australian Labour leader Harry Bridges, Avho is being tried on deportation charges, Avhen called by the Government, testified that he once jokingly said he was a member of the Communist Party but actually he never was a member and had belonged only to trade unions. He insisted, however, that it was his opinion that the Communist Party's activities were open and not subversive.
Bridges added that he believes in a democratic form of government but opposes the "capitalistic form of society which, to me, means exploitation of a lot of people for profit."
Bridges said that at the time of the maritime convention in Los Angeles in 1935 "Red baiting" became such a standing joke that everyone gave the Communist salute when entering the convention hall and addressed the chairman as "Commissar Chairman."
