HUTT CRICKET CLUB

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL YEAR

PROPOSED NEW RULE

The annual meeting of the Hutt District Club held last evening 'was presided over by the president, Mr. E. P. Bunny. The chairman congratulated the management of the club on a most successful season. Unless more grounds were available it might be necessary to limit the membersnip of the club. There were, however, prospects that more grounds could be had. The club had been the runners-up'for the senior championship. It was gratifying that the finances were in a healthy position.

Mr. E. J. Aim said that the past season had been the most successtui in the club's experience. The standard of play among all the teams had been high. The senior team had just missed the championship; junior A had put up the best performance it had ever done; junior B had won its grade championship; junior C had finished fourth; and the thirds had also performed well. The financial policy of the committee had justified itself.

The report and balance-sheet (which have been published) were adopted.

■ Mr. Aim said it was unfortunate that owing to the present limitation of grounds the club had to confine itself to six teams. It was only fair to financial members that they should have preference in gam6s over unfinancial members. On his motion alterations were made to the rules to prevent unfinancial members holding office.

On the motion of Mr. Pegler the delegates to the Wellington association were instructed to introduce the question of an alteration in the selection of representative teams.

Mr. Pegler also initiated a discussion on the question of altering the lbw rule so that a player could be lbw from a ball breaking in from leg as well as from a ball breaking from the off. The suggestion found favour with some members, but others considered that such a rule would have the effect of eliminating valuable strokes, such as the hook and the glide. One member said it would be better to have a time limit for games if it was desired to speed up play rather than to sacrifice shots.

Mr. Pegler explained that the trend of cricket in recent years was in favour of the batsman, and anything which tended to help the bowler would find favour with the public, who were tired of games being spun out over several days. A motion to introduce the question at the annual meeting of the association was defeated. Votes of thanks were passed to the ladies and to Mr. E. Hutt, Director of Reserves, bMr. Aim remarking that the Hutt Recreation Ground practice wickets were much better than other Wellington wickets. • Messrs. Aldersley, Faber, and Foster, retiring members of the committee, were thankad for their services. The president presented Mr. J. Wall with a cup won by him during the season. The following officers were elected: — President, Mr. E. P. Bunny; vice-presi-dents, same as last year with the addition of Mr. W. A. Aldersley; club captain, Mr. E. Gillies; deputy club captain, Mr. Cedric Muir; hon. secretary, Mr. R. W. Stehr; hon. treasurer, Mr. B. T. Pegler; hon. auditor, Mr. A. W. Davies; management committee. Messrs. E. J. Aim, R. Muir, G. Hoisted, O. Turner, M. Orr, J. Wall, and R. A. Wright; delegates to Wellington Cricket Association. Messrs. E. J. Aim, E. Gillies, B. T. Pegler. and R. W. Stehr; official recorders, Messrs. R. Roberts and R. Mui. The retiring recorders were thanked for their services.
